about

Some recent Max/MSP books on gen~ I'm co-authoring with my friend Graham Wakefield involved a kind of unexpected side effect in terms of how I work; I normally work by coming up with an idea (almost always in Max), patching it up, and then spending lots of time tweaking it until I get something I like, at which point I make music with it. The release schedule for the first book meant that I couldn’t do that, so I looked for another approach. Rick Rubin’s book “The Creative Act” gave me some interesting insights about the relationship between ideas and my comfort zone, and I decided to pursue something quite different than my 21st century methods. In a way, I returned to methods from earlier days.

Everything on this album is through-composed/through-played. A single keyboard is connected to multiple synths, which are crossfaded after that “first pass” to make what you hear here. I played until I stopped, and then further processed the results, did a little EQ and Altiverb. trimmed the starts and ends, and ordered the results. The titles take their names from Indonesian tidal estuaries (the linear deposition metaphor seemed like a good place to start naming).

Robert Carlberg (il miglior fabbro) helped me to re-imagine the pieces and their order, and I am very grateful for his advice
